Murray Homes Use Two Different Power Companies
Murray started its own electric company back in 1913. It is called Murray City Power and it is owned by the city. About 18,000 homes and businesses get their power straight from the city.
But Murray City Power does not cover the whole city. Homes on the east side, and homes that were added to the city later, are often on Rocky Mountain Power instead. There is no map you can look up by address. The only way to know for sure is to look at your electric bill, or call Murray City Utility Billing at (801) 264-2626. They will tell you on the phone.
This one fact decides which rebates you can get on a new heat pump or furnace.
Rocky Mountain Power Wattsmart (2026)
If Rocky Mountain Power is your electric company, you can get a rebate when you install a new heat pump. The program is called Wattsmart Homes, and it was updated on February 27, 2026. To qualify, you need to be a regular home customer (not a business) and the heat pump has to go into a home you already live in. Here are the 2026 amounts for Utah:
| Type of Heat Pump | Rebate (up to) |
|---|---|
| Air-source heat pump | $1,600 |
| Ductless mini-split heat pump | $1,700 |
| Dual-fuel heat pump (with gas furnace) | $1,450 |
| Ground-source (geothermal) heat pump | $2,000 |
You have to file the rebate paperwork within 90 days of the install. We do that for you on every install that qualifies. Your check shows up 6 to 10 weeks later, mailed straight from Rocky Mountain Power. The amounts above are the highest you can get. The exact rebate depends on how efficient the equipment is.
Enbridge ThermWise - Gas Side (2026)
If you have natural gas, you can also get rebates on the gas side. This program is called ThermWise. It is run by Enbridge Gas (the company used to be called Dominion Energy). It works for every Murray home on natural gas, no matter which electric company you have. The 2026 program runs from January 1 through December 31.
| Equipment | Rebate |
|---|---|
| Gas furnace, 95% - 97.4% AFUE* | $300 |
| Gas furnace, 97.5% AFUE or higher | $350 |
| Dual-fuel system, Tier 1 - furnace | $1,000 |
| Dual-fuel system, Tier 1 - heat pump | $700 |
| Dual-fuel system, Tier 2 - furnace | $1,200 |
| Dual-fuel system, Tier 2 - heat pump | $850 |
*AFUE is short for Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency - basically, how much of the gas your furnace burns actually heats your house. A 95% AFUE furnace turns 95% of the gas into heat. The other 5% goes up the flue. Higher AFUE = lower gas bill.
Important: ThermWise will not pay anything if you install a heat pump by itself. The dual-fuel rebate only works when the heat pump is paired with a high-efficiency gas furnace as a backup. The system also has to be set to switch over from heat pump to furnace at 40°F or colder. If your installer sets it higher than 40°F, the rebate is denied.
We file the ThermWise paperwork within the 60-day deadline on every install that qualifies.
The Federal Tax Credit (25C) Ended December 31, 2025
For years, there was a federal tax credit called Section 25C (the section number in the IRS tax code). It paid up to $2,000 on a heat pump and up to $600 on a high-efficiency furnace, taken off your federal taxes. Congress ended it on December 31, 2025 when it passed the One Big Beautiful Bill Act in July 2025. Any install you do in 2026 or later cannot claim this credit.
If a contractor in 2026 is still telling you about a federal HVAC tax credit, they are either out of date or hoping you are. The utility rebates above are still going and are not affected.
How to Find Out Which Electric Company You Have
- Look at your most recent electric bill. The company name is printed at the top.
- Or call Murray City Utility Billing at (801) 264-2626. They can tell you on the phone.
- Or go to rockymountainpower.net and try to start a new account with your address. If it works, you are on Rocky Mountain Power.
This is the first thing we ask on every quote call. The rebates on a $14,000 heat pump can change by $1,600 to $2,000 depending on which company your house is wired to.
We Handle the Rebate Paperwork
On every install that qualifies, we file the paperwork with the right utility on time - 90 days for Wattsmart, 60 days for ThermWise. You get a copy of the paperwork with your install papers, and the rebate check shows up 6 to 10 weeks later, mailed straight from the utility.
No forms to fill out. No portal to log into. No missed deadlines. It is part of the install cost.
Which Installs These Rebates Apply To
The rebates above attach to specific equipment. Here is where each one lands:
- Heat pump install - the big Wattsmart rebate ($1,450–$2,000) if you are on Rocky Mountain Power.
- Furnace replacement - the $300–$350 ThermWise gas-furnace rebate, plus the dual-fuel rebate if paired with a heat pump.
- AC replacement - where homeowners often weigh a straight AC against a rebate-eligible heat pump.
- Ductless mini-splits - the $1,700 Wattsmart ductless tier on Rocky Mountain Power.
